How Zelun changes its prices without surprising you
What it is
This article explains what happens to the price you pay Zelun for your subscription when Zelun changes its list prices. It is about your own Zelun subscription, not about what your clients pay you.
The short version:
- A new list price starts with new subscriptions. When Zelun publishes a new price for a plan, people who subscribe after that pay the new price. Your existing subscription keeps its current price until a price change is applied to it under the rules below.
- A launch-window lock. Zelun can open a launch window, a period with a start and an end date (planned at about 90 days). If your subscription was created inside that window, your price cannot go up for 12 months from the day your subscription was created. Whether you are in that group is decided on the day you subscribe. It does not change if Zelun later edits the window. If you subscribed before the window opened or after it closed, you do not get this lock.
- A protected period after an increase is announced. When Zelun announces an increase for existing customers, you keep your current price for 6 months from the announcement, and the announcement states the date that protection ends.
- The longest protection wins. Your price cannot go up before the latest of your launch lock end, your announcement protection end and any longer protection Zelun has agreed with you. Zelun can agree a longer protection for a concrete reason, recorded with who approved it. It can never end more than 24 months after the announcement it delays, and it only delays a change: it never creates a custom price for you or takes a feature out of your plan.
- A limit on how much it can rise. A single announced increase to an existing customer's price cannot be more than 10% of your current price, unless Zelun records a justification tied to a capability it has shipped.
- Notice, in writing. You are told at least 60 days before an increase takes effect, reminded at the midpoint, and told again 7 days before.
- It starts at a renewal. The new price takes effect at your first renewal on or after the later of the date 60 days after the notice and the end of your protection. It never takes effect in the middle of a billing cycle.
- You can leave first. Between the notice and the date the increase takes effect you can cancel without penalty, and you keep your service until the end of the period you already paid for. The increase does not apply to you if you cancel.
- Moving plans or currency does not carry a lock. If you move to a different plan, you are charged the current list price for the new plan and your protection ends. A price change never switches the currency of your subscription, and a lock is held in the currency you are billed in.
Before you start
- Know who receives the notices. They go to your company's billing contact. Keep that email current.
- Know your subscription's currency. Your price and any protection are in the currency you are billed in.
- Access to the Plan section. To cancel or change your plan you need a person allowed to manage billing for the company. See the article on plans and billing.
Steps
Check your price and whether it is protected
- Open My business and go to Plan.
- Read Your price, the monthly amount and its currency. For a business billed in pesos it says the amount is plus IVA.
- If your price is different from the current list price for the plan, the screen says this is the price of your current subscription and shows the list price.
- If your price is protected, the screen says Your price is protected until and the date.
When a price change is scheduled for you
- Each notice states your current price, the new price, the currency, the date it takes effect and your right to cancel. The Plan section also shows the date, the new price, that it applies from your first renewal on or after that date, and the dates the notices were sent.
- Decide before that date. If you are happy to continue, do nothing: the new price starts at your first renewal on or after the date.
- If you would rather not continue, press Cancel or manage your subscription. The cancellation is accepted without penalty, the increase does not apply to you, and your service continues until the end of the period you already paid for.
If you move to a different plan
- Moving to another plan charges that plan's current list price from then on.
- Any lock or protection you had ends at that moment, so check the plan's list price in the Plan section before you move.
What your clients see
Nothing. Your subscription price is between you and Zelun, and your clients never see it. Your own service prices and what clients pay you do not change because of this.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a new list price to change your bill at once. It applies to new subscriptions first. Yours changes only through a notified change, at a renewal.
- Expecting the launch lock if you subscribed outside the window. It is only for subscriptions created inside the launch window.
- Expecting a lock to follow you to another plan. Moving plans puts you on that plan's current list price and ends the protection.
- Expecting a price change mid-cycle. It starts at a renewal only.
- Missing the notices. They go to your billing contact. If that email is out of date, update it so you do not miss the 60-day notice, the reminder or the 7-day final notice.
- Cancelling after the effective date and expecting the old price. The right to cancel without the increase applies between the notice and the effective date.
